Sedatives not doing job for storm-shy Golden

Question: Our dog is a Golden Retriever rescue dog. We got her three years ago after the Katrina hurricane. We believe she is around 6 or 7 years old. We don’t know much of her past, except she is definitely afraid of storms.

We?re not sure if this was brought on by Katrina, or if she has always feared storms. Our vet has prescribed sedatives and they just don’t work. Is there anything else we can do to help her relax? The mere sound of thunder, rain, or seeing lightning sets her off. Thanks for your help. – Mike

Answer: Your dog most likely needs professional help. You can find a board-certified veterinary behaviorist at www.dacvb.org. Thunderstorm phobia will continue to get worse unless properly treated with management changes, behavior modification and often medications.

Sedatives alone will not work to help your dog relax. In the meantime, you can find help for Thunderstorm Phobia on the Resources page of my website: www.flvetbehavior.com.
