Yorkies attack Pomeranian; is this prejudice?

Question: I have a couple of Yorkies that like to attack my Pomeranian. Is there a reason for this? They are all female. Are the Yorkies prejudiced against a dog not of their breed? Is such a thing possible? – Karen

Answer: Females are the most likely pairings to fight. This has been shown in at least one study of free ranging dogs, and in another study that was a statistical analysis of cases in the U.S. There are lots of reasons why they might attack her. She may be the new kid on the block or she may be inappropriate herself, trying to take their things. She may be older and unable to communicate well herself due to a decrease in cognitive function or other capabilities.

I have treated dogs that are aggressive toward certain breeds, or are not aggressive toward their breed. The former can happen because the dog has had a negative experience with that breed or color of dog. The latter can happen just because there is a lack of experience with dogs other than the individual dog’s own breed.
