Pug has red bumps all over his body

Question: My pug has big red bumps all over him. They look like hives. He has food allergies, but that had been taken care of about a month ago. Do you have any idea what it may be, and how we can help it until we get him back to the vet? - Angela

Answer: Big red bumps that look like hives are generally an allergic reaction. If your dog has food allergies, he may also have allergies to other things. Inhaled allergies to pollen and mold can cause a histamine release in the skin and small red papules or hives can develop. Dogs also can get bacterial infections in their skin that may start out as small infections around the hair follicles and can spread into large round crusty spots, or they may look like small pimples.

You will need to see your veterinarian for a diagnosis. Until you get him to the doctor, try a soothing bath in an antibacterial shampoo. You need to leave the shampoo on for 10 to 15 minutes in order to kill the bacteria. If your dog is itchy, you can add an oatmeal shampoo and cr譥 rinse. Be sure to brush him well and use a fine tooth comb to remove the undercoat that may be shedding this time of year.

Your veterinarian will do a skin cytology test to see what is causing the problem. Your little pug may need antibiotics for infection or anti histamines for allergic reactions.

Please be sure to feed only his hypoallergenic food. Food allergies are fairly common and can cause many skin problems. Many times when the offending foods are identified it is hard to stick to the strict diet. Many medications are chewable and can be flavored with chicken, beef, or pork. If your pet is allergic to one of these ingredients he can?t have flavored vitamins or medications. Be sure that he doesn?t get any chew toys and rawhide.

You can give him essential fatty acids to aid in strengthening the skin and help prevent infections.
