Question: Rocky is a 4-year-old Boston terrier. He still thinks I?m a chew toy. He is crated during the day, or he would eat everything in the house. I leave him out of his cage at night and he sleeps with me. I love him so much; he?s very cuddly. But I can?t even buy him a toy, because he eats them! What can I do? I can?t put a blanket or pillow in his crate because he eats it. ? Peggy
Answer: Rocky may have separation anxiety if he primarily destroys when you are out of the house. He may also have confinement anxiety if he primarily destroys when you put him in the crate. If his signs fit with either of those diseases, you should visit your veterinarian’s office for help.
If he also destroys when you are home, he most likely is just bored, frustrated or wants attention from you. Many owners tell me that they don’t buy toys for their pet because their pet destroys them, but that is just the reason to buy toys for your pet!
Destroying things is a normal part of being a dog. Your dog needs an environment of plenty. He should have more toys than he can count. Rotate toys on a daily basis, so the toys seem new to him each day. That way, they will keep his interest. Make sure that you are giving him safe toys, especially if he actually ingests them as opposed to just destroying them.
Keep him well exercised by taking him out each day for a long walk during a cool part of the day. You might also consider doggie daycare to wear him out. Finally, make sure that he knows how to get attention from you (sitting is best) and that you don’t reward him for mouthing you or destroying toys.
