Change in cat?s behavior should mean trip to vet

Question: My cat is around 12 years old. In the last week, her behavior has changed from nestling with my husband in his chair to sleeping in a closet, barely coming out to eat and potty. She is normal in that she still eats OK and uses her litterbox. Should I take her to a vet? We have hesitated since she really freaks in the carrier, and gets very distressed. Or just take this as a sign of changing with age? — Terri

Answer: Whenever an older cat suddenly begins acting differently, I worry about medical diseases before behavioral disorders. Cats tend to hide medical illnesses from us. A visit to your veterinarian is definitely in order.

If she is healthy, I would look for changes in the environment or your schedule. Maybe there is a stray cat outside, there is construction in your home or neighborhood, or you have had visitors recently. Once you identify the stressor, you can work to help her adapt to it more easily. Simple solutions like plugging in a Feliway diffuser, adding toys and avoiding stressors can go a long way.
