Q: I adopted a 2-year-old calico cat a month ago. She only has three legs, no right front leg. When I try to pet her, she bites me. I have contacted the agency I adopted her from about giving her back due to this biting issue. Today, I adopted another 2-year-calico, which I have in the bedroom, until they are used to each other?s scent. How do I get the three-legged cat to stop biting me when I try to pet her? Is there someone in the area that specializes in this kind of situation? This biting is going to force me to give her back to an adoption agency. ? Ty
A: Board Certified Veterinary Behaviorists specialize in this kind of problem. To find a Board Certified Veterinary Behaviorist in your area, go to www.dacvb.org.
In the meantime, don’t pet your cat anywhere on her body, except her head, as cats often bite when they are petted down their back. In addition, look for signs such as dilated pupils and tail thumping (the tail swishing back and forth forcefully). If you see these signs, make sure to stop petting your cat immediately. This way, you will not worsen the behavior before you get to see a professional.
