Growling cat making owner fearful
Q: I have a 2-year-old cat that I rescued as a kitten. She has always been very playful and somewhat aggressive. She has never been one to cuddle.
Daily, she would chase my older cat around the house, but she would also play fetch with me and follow me around the house trying to get into things. Several weeks ago we adopted a 5-month-old puppy. Since then, she has been extremely aggressive: hissing, growling, and biting. I’ve become somewhat afraid of her and the household atmosphere has become tense. Any ideas for calming a cat’s aggression? — Christine
A: Hissing is a defensive feline vocalization, so she is probably afraid of the puppy. Clearly, the puppy’s presence is increasing her arousal level. Try separating the cat from the puppy while teaching the puppy basic manners, so he is under better control. Then, slowly introduce the cat to the pup in controlled conditions, so she can adjust to him.

Will salt water at beach hurt my dog?
Q.: Is it ok to bring my dog to the beach? Will the salt water hurt her? – Jean W
A.: This is a great question. There are several beaches that allow dogs, but most public beaches don’t allow dogs. You can get a hefty ticket for bringing your dog to the wrong beach.
Make sure your dog is on a leash. Bring plenty of fresh water for your dog to drink and make sure she can find a shady area to rest. Dogs pant to cool themselves off and the Florida sun can overheat them quickly if they are running hard and playing. Make sure you bring doggy cleanup bags to pick up after your dog.
It is OK to let her wade in the water or swim. The salt water can be soothing for her skin but don’t let her drink it. Many dogs drink the salt water and can have diarrhea or vomiting. Slowly let her get used to the crashing waves and use a doggy life preserver if she is not a strong swimmer. Dogs can get caught in rip currents just like
humans.
Most dogs really enjoy time at the beach and it can be a great activity for you and your dog.

Distemper extremely contagious, worse for puppies
Question: My neighbor got a new puppy and the puppy came over and played with our dog. It was a very cute puppy but it soon got sick and was sneezing. They brought it to a vet and it was given antibiotics for kennel cough. A couple weeks later it started to have seizures and the vet said it had distemper. They had to put it to sleep! My dog has been around this puppy a lot. Is my dog going to get sick? –Naomi
Answer: I am sorry to hear about your friend?s puppy. Distemper is a viral infection that can result in severe symptoms including death. The virus first attacks the respiratory cells and the dog has a runny nose with sneezing and coughing.
It is often impossible to tell the difference between distemper and the many other viruses and bacteria that can cause ?kennel cough?. Many dogs will seem to improve but the distemper virus is marching deeper. It attacks all the epithelial cells in the body. The dog may then get pneumonia. The nose and feet may grow thick hard calluses. The dog may have trouble swallowing or eating and can spike a high fever.
As the virus continues to replicate it will reach the brain and nervous tissue. The dog may develop seizures. Seizures may become almost constant and severe.
Dogs can shed virus for weeks to months. The distemper virus in an enveloped virus and is easily killed in the environment. It dies rapidly once outside of the body. Droplets or ?nose to nose? contact generally transmits it. Simple cleaning will kill the virus.
Vaccination is extremely effective at preventing infection. If your dog is up to date on his vaccinations, he should stay healthy. If he has not been vaccinated, he is in great danger of getting distemper infection. It is best to get a distemper vaccine booster as soon as possible. Since your dog was exposed to distemper, it may be best to have him vaccinated with a recombinant distemper vaccine. The advantage of this vaccine is that it will not interfere with testing for an active distemper infection.
While most puppies die from distemper virus, adult dogs have a chance at survival.
Adult dogs have a better immune system and can sometimes rally enough antibodies to fight off the infection in time.
It is always best to quarantine a new dog or puppy for two weeks before introducing them to other dogs. New puppies can be incubating a number of bacterial and viral illnesses. Make sure all puppies and dogs are up to date on vaccines. Many of the worst infections are preventable by vaccination.

Easter lillies very toxic to cats
Question: Please write about lilies and cats. I almost lost my beauiful cat to yellow lilies someone gave me in a floral arrangement. In talking to many cat owners, very few are aware of the deadly, toxic lily. ? Donna
Answer: I am so sorry to hear about your cat. Thank you for wanting to warn others about the dangers of lily toxicity. Unfortunately, many cats like to nibble on ?greens,? and indoor cats don?t generally have access to any green growing food.
When a fresh floral arrangement arrives, your kitty gets excited and wants to investigate. They like to play with the flowers and some will nibble on the flower, leaves, or stems. All parts of the lily plant are toxic to cats. Even the yellow pollen that falls off the flower can be toxic if it rubs off on the cat or the cat walks on it and then licks her paws.
The active component that causes kidney damage has not been isolated as of now, and no antidote is available. It is best to avoid having lilies in the house or yard if you have a cat. If your cat does nibble on a lily plant, bring the cat and the plant to the veterinarian as soon as possible.
Generally your veterinarian will induce vomiting, and place an activated charcoal product in your cat?s stomach to help absorb as much toxin as possible. Intravenous fluids are the treatment of choice to try and flush the kidneys and decrease the amount of damage.
Signs of lily toxicity are: vomiting, inappetance, lethargy, and dehydration.
Some cats may have tremors, seizures, or walk like they are drunk.
You must get your cat to a veterinarian very quickly, severe damage can occur very quickly in 12 to 36 hours. The sooner treatment is started, the better the prognosis

Toy poodle afraid to go for walks
Q.: My dog, Rosie, is a patient of a fellow veterinarian in Macon, Ga., and she referred me to you. I have benefitted from your articles and blog posts, and thought you might help me with an issue.
Rosie is a 5-month-old toy poodle. I have had her since she was 8 weeks old and been working with her to housetrain her as well as teach her the basics. She is doing well in most areas except walking on a leash.
I bought a harness collar and give her a treat when she walks, but she does not like it. She seems fearful and wants to sit down every 10 feet or so. I coax and cajol with enthusiasm, but she does not respond. She prefers to go back home asap! She loves to run and play in the yard, so I don’t get it.
Thanks for any advice or counsel. – Beverly
A.: I am glad to hear that you like the articles and the blogs. I can’t tell for certain from your post, however it sounds like Rosie is reacting to the head halter itself. If she is reacting to the head halter,, work on conditioning her to accept it by putting the collar on for short periods (starting at 5 to 30 seconds) while feeding her tasty treats. Slowly increase the amount of time that she wears the collar until she can tolerate it for the length of a walk. During this time, don’t walk her, but instead let her play in the yard.
Now, if Rosie is actually afraid to take a walk, regardless of whether or not she wears a head halter or another type of collar, that will require a lot more work on your part. It?s easy to understand how a dog could be perfectly happy in her own home and then be very frightened outside of the home. Generally, this is going to be as a result of either a lack of socialization and/or a hereditary predisposition. The problem is Rosie is past the socialization period, so it will take help from a behavior professional if she is actually afraid to go on walks.

A Very Nice Dog Birthday Party Can Speak Volumes
You should make sure to obtain the much-needed supplies for the very special occasion. Also, it could be quite nice to have your dog?s hair trimmed, so he/she can look quite immaculate at his/her pup birthday party. Again, you should be well-prepared. You should make sure to bake a dog-friendly birthday cake, so your pooch and other dogs have a nice meal to eat. You should make sure that they?ve a big cake, because it can be a nice thing to do, especially if you invite a good amount of dogs over for the dog birthday party.
In order to make sure that the doggie birthday party goes well, you should make sure to send off invitations to the dogs that you want to come over for the special occasion. Also, you need to make sure that all dog owners bring them over on their leashes, just in case some dogs want to become hostile. You can never be too safe. After you make sure that all of these things are complete, you can simply sit back and enjoy watching your dog have a great time at his/her own birthday party. You?ll definitely love being able to see how happy your dog will be.

Is recovery from lymphoma possible?
Question: My dog, Girlie, is 12 and I just found out she has cutaneous lymphoma. It started as just itchy patches that she aggravated and infected. Then she was on meds for two weeks, and now, in the third week, a big lump is hanging in her groin area. There are nodes running down her leg. She is not in pain, but how does it spread so fast? My vet suggests I put her to sleep. I feel he is right, but is there ever recovery from this type of cancer in older dogs? – Joanne
Answer: From your description of Girlie, it sounds as if she has cutaneous lymphosarcoma with lymph node involvement. Lymphosarcoma is cancer of lymph nodes and lymphoid glands. When the disease is present in the skin, we call it cutaneous or skin lymphosarcoma.
This cancer can begin as you have described with patches of itchy, scaly skin.
The disease can progress quickly and lymph nodes in the groin can become enlarged. There is treatment available for this disease, but this type of cancer is usually not cured with treatment.
The aim of treatment is to provide comfort to Girlie by reducing the size of the lymph node swelling and by eliminating the itchy areas in the skin. The treatment for cutaneous lymphosarcoma is usually oral chemotherapy, which is very well tolerated even in older patients. Most oral chemotherapy protocols do not cause a poor appetite or gastrointestinal upset.
Most patients that receive oral chemotherapy continue to have a very good quality of life, with very minimal side effects to treatment. There is about a 50 percent chance the treatment will work for Girlie and she will be more comfortable. If the treatment works, it can work for six months to a year and possibly longer.
I recommend you have Girlie evaluated further so her disease can be staged and we can determine how progressed it is. Once we have more information, we can work out the best treatment plan for her.
