Feral cat still hissing and running away from owner
Question: In mid-January, I took in a feral cat, about 8 months old, male after he was neutered. Now it’s almost mid-April and he still hisses at me and will not let me touch him or hold him. He runs from me when I try.
He is extremely affectionate and good natured with my other three cats. He will sit on the foot of my bed and he has learned to come and talk to me when he wants to be let out into the screen enclosure.
I had to trap him, which was awful to get him to the vet and they applied Revolution for me. It’s almost time for his second application and I don’t want to go thru the turmoil of trying to catch him. Suggestions, please, to help him socialize with me, and, if I apply revolution to the other three and not him, will that be enough to be flea-free, as he brought them into the house. – Barbara
Answer: Taking in a truly feral cat takes lots of patience, love, and training. A feral cat is one that has been raised outdoors without human contact. Many outdoor cats do not have ?owners? who claim them as their cats. These cats may live in neighborhoods or business districts and often are used to seeing humans come close to them. They may even be used to being fed by humans.
If your cat came from a colony where he was never touched or picked up as a kitten, it will be very difficult to get to that point now. The younger the kitten is when rescued and placed in a home, the better the outcome. Studies have shown cats need to have human interaction and handling during the sensitive period of 2 to 9 weeks of age.
I have seen feral cats that responded well to training and eventually let their owners pet them and pick them up. If they were older kittens when rescued they generally retain their ?wild? instincts and may hiss, scratch, and even bite when startled.
Go very slowly and build trust with your cat. Use a clicker to train for rewards and re-enforce his calm, relaxed behavior with treats and toys. Having feline pheromone diffusers or spray in your house can help keep him stay calmer and more relaxed.
The American Association of feline practitioners (www.catvets.com) has some good videos on how to train your cat to get into his carrier. They also have excellent articles on cat training and behavior. Some feral cats will need extensive training and veterinary behavior counseling. Occasionally medication may be prescribed to reduce the cat?s fear and enable him to learn new behaviors.
Until your cat?s behavior has become more stable and approachable, you can use an oral tablet or liquid to help control fleas. Program is a flea control product that comes in a liquid that is placed in the cat?s food. It is generally easy to administer to feral cats. He will need to get a separate tablet for heartworm prevention. The heartworm tablet can be placed in an edible treat to encourage him to eat it. You will need to ask your veterinarian about which products are best for your cat.

I?m So Tired of Fleas!
By Dr. Debora Lichtenberg, VMD, Pets Adviser
Anyone can get a flea problem. No matter how advanced/safe flea products become, people can be lax about treatment. Letting things get out of hand is cruel.
