Will having cats endanger woman?s pregnancy?
Question: I have two cats and I love them very much; they are 10 and 12 years old. I have had them since they were kittens. Now I am married and expecting my first child. I have read that pregnant women should not touch cats or clean litter boxes because they can get toxoplasmosis. My cats are like my first children and I can?t imagine giving them away! They need my love and I need them. I don?t want to hurt my unborn baby either. What should I do? ? Alexandra
Answer: Congratulations on your pregnancy. You do not need to get rid of your cats. However, there are simple steps to take to avoid toxoplasmosis and to stay healthy.
Toxoplasmosis is a microscopic organism called a protozoa. It can infect many creatures. It is most dangerous when a woman is infected for the first time while she is pregnant. The protozoa can cross the placenta and damage the growing baby.
It is estimated that one-third of the human population has been infected with toxoplasmosis.
In most people it may cause mild, non-specific symptoms and most people never know they had it. Generally, you develop immunity to it and that is the end of the story. However, if a pregnant person contacts toxoplasma for the first time it can infect her unborn baby and cause more serious problems.
There is good news — iIt is easy to avoid infection. I personally have been pregnant and delivered two healthy children, while living with four cats in our home and I worked with many cats daily at work. Many veterinarians and their assistants have had healthy, happy babies.
Cats are the definitive host for this parasite and, when infected, they produce oocysts in their feces. It takes 24 to 48 hours for the oocysts of toxoplasma to develop to the stage where they can infect humans. If you make sure you clean the litter box daily, you will avoid infection. I always recommend pregnant women wear disposable gloves and wash their hands well after cleaning litter boxes.
Do not feed raw or undercooked meat to your cat. Do not let your cats outside where they may catch and eat live prey. Simply, feed your cat commercially prepared cat foods or cook all food to safe temperatures.
Many feral cats will use the soil in your yard as their litter box, so remember to use gloves while working in the garden
Humans are commonly exposed by eating raw or undercooked meats. The parasite is often encysted in the meat of food animals. Make sure you practice safe food handling and wash hands after touching raw or undercooked meat. Use a cooking thermometer to make sure foods reach the proper temperature.
For more information on toxoplasmosis and pregnancy see: www.cdc.gov/parasites/toxoplasmosis/gen_info/pregnant.html
Cheers to a happy and safe pregnancy.

Hiking Backpacks for Dogs
There are many different styles of backpacks from the over the shoulder pack which is much like a purse in which dog is carried in the pooch as it is secured over the owners shoulder. Because it is soft it is comfortable for the dog and lightweight for the owner. The dog can either be enclosed or have the carrier opened for the pooch to look out.
Another type of backpack dog carrier is the backpack carrier that attaches to the owners back. Again, the material is soft and comfortable and lightweight for the owner. The dog can be completely confined or have the flap open so he is able to see his surroundings.

Watch for early warning signs of cancer in pets
Editor?s note: Dr. Stephanie Correa will be appearing at the South Florida Pet Expo, which will be held, March 24 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the South Florida Expo Center. She will be speaking about warning signs of and earl detection of cancer. She will also be giving free cancer screening examinations.
Question: I have been reading about the different types of cancer that you see in dogs and cats. What are the most common signs of cancer? Early detection of cancer in both animals and people seems to be essential. What should I look for to know if my pets have cancer?
Answer: I will answer your questions with my next three columns.
Part 1: Early warning signs and symptoms of cancer
Monitoring your pet’s appetite is an important way to determine if your pet is ill. Changes in the appetite can be the first sign that there is something wrong. Appetite changes can occur for numerous reasons. Tumors in the mouth or stomach can make it difficult for a pet to chew or swallow. Cancer in the liver or kidneys can interfere with the function of these organs and make the pet feel nauseated so that there is no appetite present. If the appetite decreases or subsides and this is not noticed, weight loss will occur.
Once a patient is losing weight from an undiagnosed disease, the disease has usually progressed and treatment becomes more challenging. Appetite is an early warning sign that can be monitored on a daily basis by observing your pet at the food bowl and watching to see that the normal amount of food is consumed each day.
Monitoring the overall activity level of the pet is also a way to monitor the overall health of your pet. A pet that is normally active and engaged in the routines of the household that becomes slow, lethargic, reluctant to exercise, or seems tired may be affected with cancer of the bone or cardiovascular system.
Cancers of the bone are painful and patients with this type of cancer are reluctant to move due to discomfort. They may limp or have difficulty running or jumping. Cancers of the cardiovascular system can prevent the lungs and heart from functioning normally and pets will have exercise intolerance. Anemia is also a common finding in pets with cancer.
Like people, pets that become anemic, or have a low red blood cell count, feel tired. They are not able to carry enough oxygen to their tissues and seem weak. Changes in activity level can occur slowly over weeks to months and may be more difficult to detect since the changes are slowly progressive. Try to compare the activity level of the pet over the current month to the activity level of the pet two to three months earlier. Sometimes these types of comparisons make it easier to realize that there has been a change. Sudden changes in the activity level are easier to notice, and often require immediate intervention.

Bichon barks, turns in circles near patio door
Question: My 3-year-old Bichon Frise barks wildly and repeatedly turns in circles when I approach and open the door to my patio. I have tried to calm her down with treats, but nothing seems to work. She is otherwise, sweet and seems to understand almost everything we say to her, except for the above. Any thoughts on this matter? ? Rita
Answer: Your dog is either excited or anxious. She is displaying a displacement behavior. These types of behaviors are displayed when a dog is conflicted or frustrated. She may be afraid to go outside or afraid that you will leave her inside. She may just be really excited and unable to control herself.
To correct this, first teach your dog to sit. When she can sit on your verbal cue, start to ask her to sit for all interactions with any person. This means that any privilege including petting and going outside, start with sit.
It should take her about a week to get this down pat. When she knows this, you can start by going to the door with her next to you. Ask her to sit before she starts spinning — this is a really important step — and then reward her immediately. If food is a reward for her, great, give her a treat. If she is excited about going outside, instead of a treat, open the door immediately and tell her that she can go out. Soon, she will understand that only calm behavior yields her a reward.
If your dog is afraid to go out or is afraid to be left inside when you go out, speak to your veterinarian about the treatments for anxiety and fear.

Does it matter when ?giant breed? dogs are neutered?
Question: I am very interested in your thoughts on when giant breed dogs should be neutered. I had never heard of any link between them possibly being taller and “leggy” or the being more prone to rupturing cruciate ligaments.
We neutered our English Mastiff when he was approximately 7 months old, based on the advice from our vet, and our breeder never mentioned waiting for any purpose. I weighed the possible future medical issues and behavioral issues. He never had social issues, so we just went ahead and did it, because our vet suggested that most are neutered/spayed by 7 months of age.
As it turns out, our mastiff is extremely leggy (almost Great Dane-like) and during youth and midlife weighed around 215-225 pounds. He is now almost 9 and down to 185, but he has had to have surgeries on both of his knees. I am really curious about tying this to him being neutered so young. Our other mastiff wasn’t neutered until he was just about 4, because the breeders had thought of showing him and that is really the only reason why we waited. I look forward to hearing from you. – Kelly
Answer: The traditional age for castration surgery in dogs is often around 5 to 7 months of age. The surgery can be done safely at 8 weeks of age and that is when most animal shelters and rescue groups do the surgery. Early spay and neuter programs have had long-term follow-up studies and have proven to be great programs. The program has been extremely helpful in decreasing the numbers of breeding dogs. Fewer dogs develop behavior issues and many health problems are prevented.
I am sorry to hear about your dog?s ruptured anterior cruciate ligaments. It is not uncommon for a large dog to have ruptures on both knees. Most RACL in young dogs are due to an injury. Overweight dogs are also more at risk. Giant breed dogs are more likely to get RACL than small dogs. Studies have shown the following breeds to have the highest risk of RACL: Neapolitan mastiff, Newfoundland, Akita, St. Bernard, Rottweiler, Chesapeake Bay retriever, and American Staffordshire terrier.
Many dogs get RACL. Genetics, athletic conditioning, body weight, and type of activity would appear to have more of a factor in development of this problem.
To my knowledge there are no formal studies to show proof that dogs neutered before 6 months of age have a higher incidence of RACL.
You made a good decision to neuter your dog. You prevented behavior problems and more serious health conditions.

Dog likes blue toys; can dogs see colors?
Question: My dog likes to play with his toys. I have noticed that he likes his blue toys the best. Do dogs see in color?
Answer: Dogs have different vision than humans. The type of cells that make up the retina in a dog is different in dogs. Dogs have more rod cells and less cone cells. The cone cells help dogs see in color but they can?t see as many colors and the colors may not be as vibrant as humans see them.
Dogs may have trouble distinguishing between red and green. They may see shades of blue-green as gray. It is hard to know, since dogs cannot respond verbally to conventional vision tests the way that humans can.
We do know dogs and cats can see better at night. They have more rod cells and a structure called a tapetum in the back of the eye. The tapetum acts like a mirror and reflects more light into the eye so that they can see in low light. When you take a flash picture of your dog you will see the bright yellow or orange color in your dogs eye from the light being reflected back. Human eyes tend to look red with a flash picture due to the blood vessels in the back of the eye.
Dogs may be able to see movement better than humans, particularly at a distance. They can detect a larger array of gray scale. However, still objects can be difficult for dogs to see unless they are close up. Dogs rely more on their fabulous sense of smell to help them identify objects.
Some people believe that dogs may actually be identifying their toys more by sense of smell than color. However, many owners have told me that their dogs have the same exact toy in different colors and their dog will fetch the correct color toy by voice command.
