Dog ruining carpet with new, unattractive habit
Question: I recently moved into a small carpeted apartment. My dog is showing signs of being unhappy by urinating daily while I’m at work. He is 10 and has never had accidents before unless sick. I have left the TV on while away and spend most of my time with him. I’m not sure what to do, short of crating him.
He has abandonment issues and has never grown out of it, but again, urinating has never been a part of that issue before. I can only surmise that while I was unemployed for nine months he got used to having me at home and now that I’m at work, he is having trouble. It’s been three months now, the apartment stinks, I need a life outside and doggy daycare is not in my budget. There is a cat a home, too, for company. ? Dianna
Answer: Your dog could have a urinary tract infection, causing him to urinate in your house. If he is physically healthy, his signs are most consistent with separation anxiety or cognitive dysfunction.
Separation anxiety occurs in about 25 percent of dogs in the United States. Dogs generally show signs of separation anxiety after a move or a change in owner schedule. The presence of another pet is generally not adequate to soothe the panic that the dog feels. Separation anxiety progresses with time — getting worse if not treated.
Bring your dog to your veterinarian for a physical examination and possibly lab work to rule out underlying medical issues including a urinary tract infection. Speak to your veterinarian about possible treatments for separation anxiety. They will include medications to help you get out of the house without worrying about your dog as well as behavior modification to help your dog adjust to the changes in your schedule.
In the meantime, make sure to leave your dog with something fun when you leave the house. For example, you can stuff a Kong toy with canned and dry food and freeze it. Keep your returns and departures low-key, so your dog will not get signals from you that it is a big deal that you are gone. If your dog loves his crate, crating him is a good idea.
If he doesn’t love his crate or he has not been crated in a while, crating him could cause him to seriously injure himself and I would recommend you avoid it. You could confine him to a part of your house that isn’t carpeted until you can get to your veterinarian’s office. Separation anxiety is treatable and manageable so don’t give up hope.

Devon Rex kitten has vitamin K deficiency
Question: A Devon Rex kitten bred by me has been diagnosed with vitamin K deficiency coagulopathy. I can find very little information about this condition, either online or in my books. Am I right in thinking that this gene is recessive, therefore both parents need to carry it? Also is there a test for it? Any advice or information would be very welcome. – Anne
Answer: A coagulopathy is a condition that means when a cat gets injured, the wound will not stop bleeding. You may be familiar with the condition of hemophilia. Hemophilia is a congenital condition where a certain clotting factor is missing and the blood cannot clot properly. It can be life threatening when large injuries occur.
Humans and animals alike can have blood-clotting disorders. They are diagnosed by blood tests. Congenital blood clotting disorders are more common in purebred dogs and cats, but can occur in mixed breeds.
Vitamin K is very important in blood clotting. Most rat poison contains Warfarin or similar products that cause internal bleeding when the rat eats the poison. The ?antidote? for Warfarin is vitamin K injections and tablets.
Many people have to take small doses of Coumadin to help ?thin their blood? and prevent blood clots from forming. Coumadin works in a similar way to Warfarin. It must be closely monitored to keep the anticoagulant level safe.
Vitamin K deficiencies can also occur from eating a deficient diet. Most vitamin K comes in green leafy vegetables. Bacteria in the intestines also make vitamin K.
The most common causes of vitamin K deficiency coagulopathy are ingestion of, rat poison, Coumadin, or eating a rat that has recently ingested large amounts of rat poison.
The best preventative is to make sure your cat is eating a healthy diet and does not have access to your medications. Make sure that you do not use rat poison and don?t allow your cat to hunt and ingest rats.

Cat won?t drink from dish, only wants water from running faucet
Question: My 5-year-old male neutered cat refuses to drink water from a dish anymore. He wants only water from the faucet in bathroom. The water all through house is the same, and this behavior started only five months ago. He cries to get this water and his water dish is freshened twice daily. Why is he doing this? – Nadine
Answer: This behavior is very common in cats. So much so that there is an entire market of cat water fountains. Because his drinking habits have changed, it is best to bring him to your veterinarian to have a physical examination done. You just can’t tell what small sign your cat is giving you that will lead to the discovery of a larger medical illness. Cats are great at hiding illness from us.
If your cat is healthy, I would recommend that you go with the flow. Instead of fighting your cat’s desires, head down to your local pet supply store and get some cat water fountains.

Does having 7 or 8 cats mean owner is hoarding?
Question: How do you tell if someone is “animal hoarding”?
I have a friend who has seven or eight cats. His house smells of litter boxes and the cats spray all over the place. It is not that he doesn?t clean the litter boxes or clean up after the cats, it’s just that there are so many, that one or another cat is always defecating somewhere in the house. He does take the cats to the vet when needed, but of course, that is expensive and money can be an issue for him. – John
Answer: I am glad to see that you have concern for your friend and the cats. Many people can be responsible owners of multiple pets without being ?hoarders?.
Animal hoarding is a disease and is generally characterized by someone who collects large numbers of pets that are not appropriately cared for. The pets may not have adequate food or water. The pets are often not spayed or neutered and they are not given regular veterinary care. They often are not groomed appropriately. The living conditions are often not sanitary.
Your friend has seven or eight cats. I know many people who have this many cats, or more, and take excellent care of them and the cats have wonderful homes. However, the cats need to be properly cared for every day. Your friend must be able to feed them and provide clean water at all times.
They need to have access to litter boxes and, generally, we say that you should have one more litter box than the number of cats that you have. For your friend that would be nine boxes! The boxes should be scooped daily or even twice daily. Cats may start to spray urine when boxes are not adequately cleaned. They also may urine mark when they are not spayed or neutered. If the boxes get too dirty, they quit using them all together.
If too many cats are in a small area, cats may sabotage the litter box and attack cats as they try to use it. You need adequate space to segregate the cats and make options for using the litter box. It is important that your friend keeps their living area clean and sanitary.
He needs to find ways to keep the cats happy by providing climbing trees and cat beds. The cats deserve to have a good quality of life. Cats can get very stressed when in overcrowded situations and fighting and injuries can occur.
Everyone has limits to what they can afford and how much time they have to take care of a large number of pets. For some people one pet is more than they can handle. Your friend may need some gentle persuasion to find a good home for one or two of the cats so that he can get to a number that he can comfortably manage and afford.
