Cat won?t drink from dish, only wants water from running faucet
Question: My 5-year-old male neutered cat refuses to drink water from a dish anymore. He wants only water from the faucet in bathroom. The water all through house is the same, and this behavior started only five months ago. He cries to get this water and his water dish is freshened twice daily. Why is he doing this? – Nadine
Answer: This behavior is very common in cats. So much so that there is an entire market of cat water fountains. Because his drinking habits have changed, it is best to bring him to your veterinarian to have a physical examination done. You just can’t tell what small sign your cat is giving you that will lead to the discovery of a larger medical illness. Cats are great at hiding illness from us.
If your cat is healthy, I would recommend that you go with the flow. Instead of fighting your cat’s desires, head down to your local pet supply store and get some cat water fountains.

Question: I have a daschund who has back problems and arthritis. I have heard about laser treatment and saw on your Facebook page that you offer this service – would this possibly help my Patches? I would love to be able to treat her with something besides medications. — Julie
Answer: Many dachshunds have back problems and can have severe recurring pain. Rest and NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can help to calm down a mild episode. More severe problems may need steroids and muscle relaxers. Some dogs will have severe herniation of the disc material and need surgery. Occasionally, dogs will become paralyzed.
Laser therapy can be a great addition to your dogs treatment program. Laser therapy works to manage pain, break the inflammatory cycle, improve nerve function and accelerate healing. It also has the ability to alleviate the cause of the pain and inflammation.
The definition of Companion Class IV Laser Therapy is ?the application of red and infrared light over any anatomical area to improve and augment wound/soft tissue healing and provide relief for both acute and chronic pain.? Laser therapy is used to: increase the speed, quality and tensile strength of tissue repair; provide pain relief; resolve inflammation and improve function of damaged neurological tissue. It is sometimes used as an alternative to needles for acupuncture.
The laser we use is a ?cold? laser, which is different from the laser used in laser surgery. The photons in the laser stimulate each individual cell to revitalize and activate its own healing processes through a biochemical cascade of events. Damaged cells absorb the photons emitted by the laser. When beginning laser therapy, it is important to realize it works best when applied aggressively the first several weeks.
It is not unusual to begin with laser therapy every other day until the initial symptoms have diminished, then reduce the therapy sessions to twice per week until the condition is at least 80 percent improved or more.
Finally, your veterinarian will establish a maintenance therapy program or begin a change in protocol until a final desirable outcome is reached.The laser therapy can also help with Patches? arthritic joints. Laser therapy has been used for post surgical treatment to help wounds heal faster. It is also used for chronic non-healing wounds, ear infections, anal gland abscesses, bladder infections, dermatitis, and sprains and strains.

Does having 7 or 8 cats mean owner is hoarding?
Question: How do you tell if someone is “animal hoarding”?
I have a friend who has seven or eight cats. His house smells of litter boxes and the cats spray all over the place. It is not that he doesn?t clean the litter boxes or clean up after the cats, it’s just that there are so many, that one or another cat is always defecating somewhere in the house. He does take the cats to the vet when needed, but of course, that is expensive and money can be an issue for him. – John
Answer: I am glad to see that you have concern for your friend and the cats. Many people can be responsible owners of multiple pets without being ?hoarders?.
Animal hoarding is a disease and is generally characterized by someone who collects large numbers of pets that are not appropriately cared for. The pets may not have adequate food or water. The pets are often not spayed or neutered and they are not given regular veterinary care. They often are not groomed appropriately. The living conditions are often not sanitary.
Your friend has seven or eight cats. I know many people who have this many cats, or more, and take excellent care of them and the cats have wonderful homes. However, the cats need to be properly cared for every day. Your friend must be able to feed them and provide clean water at all times.
They need to have access to litter boxes and, generally, we say that you should have one more litter box than the number of cats that you have. For your friend that would be nine boxes! The boxes should be scooped daily or even twice daily. Cats may start to spray urine when boxes are not adequately cleaned. They also may urine mark when they are not spayed or neutered. If the boxes get too dirty, they quit using them all together.
If too many cats are in a small area, cats may sabotage the litter box and attack cats as they try to use it. You need adequate space to segregate the cats and make options for using the litter box. It is important that your friend keeps their living area clean and sanitary.
He needs to find ways to keep the cats happy by providing climbing trees and cat beds. The cats deserve to have a good quality of life. Cats can get very stressed when in overcrowded situations and fighting and injuries can occur.
Everyone has limits to what they can afford and how much time they have to take care of a large number of pets. For some people one pet is more than they can handle. Your friend may need some gentle persuasion to find a good home for one or two of the cats so that he can get to a number that he can comfortably manage and afford.

Pumpkin for Dogs
There are some tasty treats for dog?s and among tasty and nutritious treats is pumpkin! However, when you are adding pumpkin to the animal?s diet, make sure it is not pumpkin pie filling as it does have added sugars and spices which the dog should not consume.
Feeding pumpkin to dog?s that are overweight is a great means to help the animal slim. Canned pumpkin for dogs can replace 1/3 of your dog?s food and is a great source of potassium, beta carotene and vitamin A. To help preserve the life of the pumpkin it can be placed in ice cube trays and frozen.
Because pumpkin is high in fiber and water, it is a great aid to help relieve constipation as well. For dog?s that are vomiting, it is also a great means to stop vomiting. Simply feed your dog one teaspoon for small dogs and for medium to large dogs, two teaspoons to a tablespoon.

Fleas are making dogs miserable; what can owners do?
Question: Help! My two dogs (Maltese) are being eaten alive by fleas. I am faithful with applications of Revolution. The start of our problem was when the vet had me try Sentinel in December. By January, I went back to Revolution. I treat all areas in the house. I know they are picking them up on our walks. I have begun spraying the dogs w/flea preventive when we walk. That still does not help. I live in a community where they spray, take care of all common areas. My poor dogs are miserable. – Nona
Answer: It has been a challenging year for flea control. You have been using very safe and effective products that generally do a fantastic job at controlling fleas. The great thing is that these products also prevent heartworms and other parasites.
The trouble is that they are not killing the fleas fast enough for a ?flea allergic? dog. Revolution is a great topical product that can take hours to kill the adult fleas. The fleas can bite before they die. The fleas will never reproduce but can still cause your dog to itch and scratch for days.
Sentinel is a tablet that the dog takes by mouth. It does not kill adult fleas. Once a flea takes a blood meal on your dog the eggs will not be able to develop to adult fleas.
For dogs that are flea allergic I like to use a ?faster kill? product. Some products with a fast kill are Capstar, Comfortis, and Trifexis.
These are all tablets that are taken by mouth. The fleas often die within an hour or so. I like these products for people who don?t like to put smelly tubes of liquid on their pets.
Remember that it is very hard to keep an outdoor area ?flea free?. Most backyards are visited by wildlife that can carry fleas. Many neighborhoods also have feral cats that can carry fleas. Fleas are often found in abundance where the pet sleeps. Good flea control in the house and yard can help make a safe zone for your pet.
Ask your veterinarian which products are best for your pet.

Cat won?t drink from dish, only wants water from running faucet
Question: My 5-year-old male neutered cat refuses to drink water from a dish anymore. He wants only water from the faucet in bathroom. The water all through house is the same, and this behavior started only five months ago. He cries to get this water and his water dish is freshened twice daily. Why is he doing this? – Nadine
Answer: This behavior is very common in cats. So much so that there is an entire market of cat water fountains. Because his drinking habits have changed, it is best to bring him to your veterinarian to have a physical examination done. You just can’t tell what small sign your cat is giving you that will lead to the discovery of a larger medical illness. Cats are great at hiding illness from us.
If your cat is healthy, I would recommend that you go with the flow. Instead of fighting your cat’s desires, head down to your local pet supply store and get some cat water fountains.
