Keep those teeth pearly white!
There are several things that you can do to help keep your dog's teeth clean and your dog's breath fresh.
One thing you can do is feed your dog a raw diet. An important part of a raw diet is bones, especially raw meaty bones. By having your dog chew on raw meaty bones, it will help keep their teeth clean and the below products will not be needed. Besides the added health benefits, one of the added benefits to feeding a raw diet is that your dog's teeth will stay nice!
Another way to prevent bad dog breath is to brush your dog's teeth every day. We have an uniquely shaped dog toothbrush that will make cleaning your dog's teeth easy. This toothbrush as three sides so you can cover triple the space in one brush.
Along with a dog toothbrush, you will also need some toothpaste that is made for dogs. It is important to use toothpaste that is made for dogs, as human toothpaste can be dangerous.
The final option available at Poochieheaven to help keep your dog's teeth pearly white and spray on teeth cleaners. We have two options, Petzlife, available in a gel and spray, and KissAble Probiotic Oral Hygiene Spray. Both of these are sprayed on your dog's teeth and help to break down plaque and tarter.
Visit Poochieheaven for all your dog dental care needs!

Why do some cancers attack so quickly?
Question: My dog was recently diagnosed with a hemangiosarcoma of the spleen. She was completely normal and then collapsed in the kitchen. She seemed very weak and we rushed her to the veterinarian. She was bleeding into her abdomen and she had emergency surgery to remove the bleeding tumor. Now she is back to normal.
My veterinarian said the tumor was removed from her spleen and it was very aggressive and her prognosis is poor. I do not understand how my dog could be normal one day, and dying from cancer the next.
Answer: I know it is very difficult to understand how this can happen so quickly. Aggressive cancer can grow rapidly, and hemangiosarcomas are very aggressive tumors. They grow rapidly in only weeks and can cause the patient to become suddenly weak since bleeding occurs.
Hemangiosarcomas arise from the lining of the blood vessels. As they grow larger and larger, bleeding from the tumor occurs. If there is rapid bleeding the patient becomes rapidly anemic from blood loss. This means that you see signs as you describe like collapse, lethargy, and white or pale gums.
The spleen is a very vascular organ and is the most common location for a hemangiosarcoma. Removing the spleen and the tumor stops the bleeding. This is why your dog has returned to normal so quickly after surgery. Once the bleeding tumor is removed, the anemia resolves. Unfortunately, since hemangiosaromas arise from the lining of the blood vessel, they are highly metastatic tumors. This means the tumor has a high chance of shedding cancer cells into the blood vessels. The cancer cells can implant and grow in other places in the abdominal cavity. This usually happens within two or three months after surgery.
Generally, chemotherapy is used to try to destroy the cancer cells before they implant in other organs. Unfortunately, since this tumor is so aggressive, the chemotherapy is usually not a curative treatment option. It slows down the progression of the spread of the tumor and may give the patient a longer time before metastasis is detected. Chemotherapy treatments are well tolerated by most canine patients and this is the next treatment step that would be indicated for your dog.

A Super Dog Christmas Story, Do you have something to share?
Pet owners love their dog for a reason. Let me ask you, ?Why do you love your dog??
Date back in 1700?s; dogs have done lots of help to the human race. The most famous dog was Barry the Saint Bernard who was reported to have saved around 40-100 people that were trapped in a snow.
Today a significant number of dogs are working with the military and police around the world to help solve crimes and to keep people safe from different acts of terrorism. Not only that, there are lots of things dogs do to make the life of their pet owners more meaningful.
So let?s get back to the question, ?Why do you love you?re your dog?? Give me a reason?
Many of you will definitely answer, ?My dog is my best companion.? Truly a dog will never leave you as long as you take care of it until the rest of his life. People will come and go in your life, even your kids will leave you but your pet stays by your side.
Here is one reason one pet owner loves her dog, its? name is Jackie-an Australian Shepherd. A dog breed characterized as easy going, easy to train and highly intelligent. Australian Shepherd are courageous, a good watch dog, loves kids, attentive, a loyal friend, affectionate, and naturally protective.
A day before Christmas Jackie and her pet owner went for a walk in a very cold winter clad in their Christmas outfit. The pet owner vividly remembers her Australian shepherd was so pretty in her dog Santa costume, with dog booties and dog Santa hat on.
After a long walk they went back home and suddenly Jackie?s master cannot breathe. She is having an Asthma attack. In the midst of her panic she can?t find her asthma inhaler. Jackie?s seems to know what?s going on with her master, she starts sniffing, walking all over the bedroom, went underneath the bed and in his mouth was the asthma inhaler.
Jackie saved her masters life that Christmas. She was really smart and that?s the reason why until today she is loved by her master so much. Every Christmas Jackie always receives a special dog Christmas gift. Her master can?t thank her enough for being a super dog and best companion.
Here is another super dog story that was published in the book ?Chicken soup for the teen soul.? It is about Dusty the Wonder dog, a German shepherd and half collie. Her pet owner Mary said, Dusty was a gift from her aunt and uncle. At first hug she loved Dusty and knew it was a special puppy.
One night, Dusty runs to everybody?s bedroom, barking frantically until he got Mary?s mom?s attention. Half awaked, the mom asked Dusty? The dog keeps barking, so the mom thought he needs to go out to potty but instead of doing his duty he run across the street, where a house was on fire. Immediately Mary?s mom called the firefighters for help and the house that was burning was of Mary?s best friend and her family.
Dusty saved their lives. From that night on Mary promised she would let Dusty sleep in her bed for the rest of her life.
That is a perfect dog present on Christmas day and every day in a dog?s life. So, what about you, What?s your dog?s heroic story?

What should owner do about fearful cockatoo?
Question: I recently adopted a female umbrella cockatoo. She seems very sweet and does not bite, but she’s terrified of people. I think she was scared in the previous household by a caretaker while the owner was away. She eats and drinks fine, but she goes right to the bottom of her cage in fear whenever I walk by or try to talk to her. What can I do to win her over?
Answer: Fear-related behavioral disorders are very common in birds. Who knows what this bird has been through or if she has had any experience with people outside of her original owner. The key will be to take it slow and teach her that you won’t hurt her. Follow the steps below and you will be on your way to helping your bird be more confident.
1. Enrich your bird’s environment. Birds need to have their toys rotated frequently (for some birds, that means every other day). Simple enrichment decreases stress allowing the bird to be more open to change.
2. Let your bird forage for her food. Many fearful birds are reluctant to approach novel things so introduce foraging slowly. You can find lots of information on foraging for birds on the internet. Just as with environmental enrichment, this is a big stress reducer for birds.
3. Clicker train your bird. You will find information on this topic at www.clickertraining.com. Clicker training allows you to work from afar to increase her confidence. It doesn’t matter what you teach her to do. You are simply setting up structured interactions with her so that you are predictable. These types of interactions lessen anxiety and fear in many animals.
4. Do not force your bird to be with the you.
5. Give your bird a place to hide or move her cage off the beaten path. This will give her a safe place, decreasing her hypervigilance.
6. Call out to her as you pass by the cage so that she will know that you are coming. As you are walking by, drop a tasty treat into her bowl. Do this every time that you go by her cage. Soon, your voice and your entry into the room will be paired with food, changing the meaning of your presence from frightening to rewarding.
It will take some time, but before too long, she will be stepping up and calling to you without any fear at all.

Lab puppy?s ?bunny hop? may be hip dysplasia
Question: I have a 10-month-old chocolate lab puppy. He has been very healthy and happy, but lately after I play fetch with him, he starts to run in a strange way where his back legs sort of hop. He sometimes cries as he is trying to get up after taking a nap. He may limp for a few steps and then he seems fine and wants to play. He is eating great and everything else is normal. Should I be worried? Is this normal? — Kileigh
Answer: Labrador Retriever puppies are often full of energy and love to play. They are a large breed of dog and often weigh 60 to 100 pounds. Large-breed dogs can be prone to developing a condition in their rear quarters called ?hip dysplasia?.
Hip dysplasia is a condition where the hip joint does not form correctly and results in a loose unstable joint. The ball and socket joint may be more like fitting a ?square into a round hole?. The joint doesn?t move smoothly and grates and rubs causing pain and inflammation. This condition gets worse as the dog ages. Many dogs will ?bunny-hop? when running, or swivel their hips from side to side as they walk. They will attempt to transfer most of their weight onto the front legs. They can have difficulty getting up from a sitting position.
Your veterinarian can do an examination to palpate the hip joint and check it in flexion and extension. Generally X-rays will be needed to diagnose the condition. In cases where hip dysplasia is severe in a young dog, surgical correction may be the best option.
Milder cases of hip dysplasia can be treated with NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Rimadyl, Deramaxx, or Metacam). Feeding a good-quality large-breed puppy food is very important. In the past, some puppy diets caused huge growth spurts and made this condition more likely to develop. Vitamin C and Vitamin E can be helpful. You can feed a food with glucosamine and chondroitin added into it, or choose supplements like Dasuquin or Cosequin.
It is very important to have frequent visits with your veterinarian to develop a diagnosis and plan for your puppy as soon as possible.
The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals has program to certify breeding dogs with good or excellent hips. This involves sending X-rays of a dog that is 2 years or older to the OFA for the radiologists to score the conformation of the hip joint. While this system is not infallible, it has helped to select parents that are free of the severe forms of hip dysplasia. It is best to choose a puppy whose parents have been certified by the OFA.

Holiday Photos with your Doggy: Useful Tips to Take Good Pics
?Woof? ?Woof? Hello to all my fellow canines and to all the pet lovers out there! You might be wondering why I keep wiggling my tails?Oh well I?m so excited!!! Holiday season is coming soon?my masters are talking about Halloween and they?re planning of some great activities like trick or treat?I love the treat! I?m looking forward to that. I heard the scary sounds and saw the creepy videos they?re watching last night, I wasn?t frightened because I was sitting on my master?s lap, it?s cozy and I enjoy her petting me?by the way my name is Miny a two-year old bichon frise (French-a curly lap dog). I am a cheerful and friendly type of dog, I love children and people call me a companion dog. Enough about me, let?s go back to the topic?holiday season!!!
Speaking of holidays everybody is excited, aren?t you? I am. First, my master?s friends, visitors, and relatives are coming?that means they will bring their canine pets too. I will have the opportunity to socialize and party with my furry brethren and children will surely be petting me. They will ask my pet owner to play with me and take a picture with me. Children just love dogs like me and I love them too! Plus they will dress me up with a Halloween costume too?isn?t that exciting?
See?during holiday season I am kind of center of attraction. They love to include me on every photo opportunity, that?s what you call a dog celebrity! ?Woof? ?Woof? that is fun!
Many dog owners like you love to include their pets during holiday photos be it Halloween, Christmas or New Year. Dogs like me love the photo ops and I?m sure my canine brethren feel the same. But sometimes it?s difficult to take good pictures with your pet right? Some dogs have behaviors?temperaments; they are overly excited and don?t know how to pose like their human companions. I am like that too. I lose focus especially when children are around me my concentration is to play with them. During picture taking, my pet owner Lany use techniques so she can take a good photograph of me with everyone.
Here are some tips you might want to practice and consider when taking pictures with your dogs during holidays:
1. Picture training before picture taking- Days before the holiday kicks off Lany trained me with the picture taking. She asks me to sit down and stay in one position.?Woof, woof? I follow her command, she showed me the camera with a treat of course, she leans forward and look me in the eye. She calls my name in a calm voice to get my attention and say ?smile? then click. She repeats it over and over until I perform a good job then hand me the treat.
2. Organize and make list of everything you need- Lany loves to take picture with me so she makes sure everything is ready. I see her prepare the camera, batteries, tripod, and of course my costumes and other accessories she wants me to wear. She prepares her costumes too.
3. Talk to everyone who wants to take picture with your dog- Lany introduces me to everybody and instruct them what to do when taking picture, she?s basically teaching them how to hold me and communicate with me. It is important to keep me focus to have a good picture.
4. Consider the location and be conscious about the lighting- if there are lots of visitors outdoor picture taking is great because you have enough space, not crowded with proper lighting. ?Woof, Woof? if everyone is talking around me, I get confused, stressed, and agitated. Location and space is important for dogs like me to stay focus and pay attention.
