Styptic Powder for Cut Dog Nails

Styptic powder for dogs is something that should be in the medicine cabinet for each of our family pets. Why? Because it is an antiseptic clotting agent and when grooming the dogs nails, can come in very handy. Often when groom dog nails, owners clip the nails too short, cutting into one of the many blood vessels in the nails. This is not only uncomfortable for the dog; it can cause a threat of infection.
When a blood vessel is clipped, the nails begin to bleed. And, there can be an excessive amount of blood. With the styptic powder, the antiseptic clotting agent not only helps to heal the wound, it helps to stop the bleeding.
By sprinkling a small amount onto to the dog?s nails, the vessels will contract pulling them back into the dog?s claw. Because it
Because the styptic powder causes the vessels to contract further back into the claw and clots the blood, it makes for future trimmings easier. Simply sprinkle on a small amount on the nail on the affected area.

Airline Approved Dog Carriers for Delta Airlines

Delta is one airline that does allow small cats and dogs and sometimes small birds to travel in the cabin of the aircraft with the owner.  The pet must be secured in an approved under the seat carrier.  For larger pets, the pets must be check baggage or cargo and must be transported in an airline approved dog carrier as well.
To determine Delta airline approved dog carriers you can go directly to their ?Pet Rules? site.  The under the seat carrier is designed much like a duffle bag only it meets the requirements to safely and securely transport the hound.  The bags are comfortable and well ventilated and are carried as by two hand straps or shoulder straps. Other approved styles are pet carriers that are designed with wheels and an extended handle which owners can conveniently push their animals.
Other designs include the pet crate which is designed to fit under the seat in the cabin area and for larger dogs, can be purchased for travel for the cargo area.  These crates are constructed with a durable sturdy plastic and are well ventilated and include an easy to carry handle for the owner to transport the animal inn the carrier.

  •          And helps to keep the dog smelling good

Coconut oil improves the animal?s digestion and nutrient absorption and is definitely an addition to the animal?s diet that each owner should consider.
The oil is tasty for the animal and can be feed to the dog on a kitchen spoon.  The proper dosage is 1 teaspoon per 20 pounds of the animal?s weight.

Coconut oil is also available in coconut chips for dogs

Despite training, Schipperke puppy acts poorly on leash

Question: I have a 6-month-old puppy who has been through two sets of puppy classes. She is a Schipperke. Sometimes, when she encounters people and/or dogs, she barks like crazy, growls and works herself into a frenzy. Sometimes, she notices them, but does nothing. There is no rhyme or reason to the people or dogs. The instructor at my dog training facility says not to worry right now, that she is young. Should I be concerned? How is the best way to handle this behavior without reinforcing it? – Lori

Answer: Leash reactivity is very common. Some dogs are fearful and they react to repel stimuli. If this was the case with your dog, she would show fear in other ways as well. For example, when people reach for her, she would put her tail down, her ears back and cower. Some dogs are frustrated because they want to get to the person or dog to greet them, but they can’t because they are leashed. As a result, they get agitated and start to bark.

In either case, control is the first step. To get control, work on your dog’s basic obedience and use these exercises when she sees any stimulus that she might react to. For example, try to get her attention so that she doesn’t start barking in the first place. The next step is addressing the primary problem. If she is fearful, but not aggressive, you should work on socialization. You can find lots of information on socialization and training on my website at http://www.flvetbehavior.com/Web/Resources.html.

If she is frustrated, you can work on teaching her how to greet other dogs. Once you have good control over her, make her interactions with people or dogs contingent on another behavior. For example, ask her to sit before she is allowed to greet any person or dog. Make sure to implement this no matter what situation she is in, even at home. It will become her default behavior soon. Then, when she sees a dog or person that she wants to interact with, she will sit. If you need help beyond, your dog may be appropriate for the Reactive Dog Class that I teach. You can find information on it at http://www.flvetbehavior.com/Web/Classes_clinics.html.

Dog having problems with husband back in owner?s life

Question: I have two toy poodles, ages 9 and 10 years old. They sleep on my bed. My husband is back home after four years and my 10-year-old dog is having problems, because she used to sleep on his side of the bed.

Last night, she was digging and scratching on my husband?s leg to make him move over. She?s also started eliminating in the house, and has never acted this way before. My husband is very gentle with her, never yells at her. The poodle has known him since she was 6 months old. How should I handle her? ? Denise

Answer: Imagine, you are 50 years old, and for 20 years someone has been out of your life. Now, suddenly without warning, they are back. Not only are they back in the house, but they are taking your spot in bed and taking up time with your most treasured person. Wouldn’t you be a little stressed?

Your dog is clearly very stressed by this change, however, she can adjust with simple management.

Remind her of her housetraining by taking her to her spot and rewarding her for eliminating there. Make sure that your husband does the rewarding things with her such as feeding, walking and playing to build a strong relationship with her.

Finally, teach both of your dogs to go to their dog beds on cue and to get off of the bed. Once you have done this, no longer allow them on the bed at night. At first, she might scratch on the side of your bed or bark. The best thing for you to do is to ignore her completely. If you ignore her, she will most likely adjust to sleeping in her own bed within three days and you all will get a good night’s sleep.

Devon Rex kitten has coagulopathy (blood-clotting disorder)

Question: A Devon Rex kitten bred by me has been diagnosed with vitamin K deficiency coagulopathy. I can find very little information about this condition, either online or in my books. Am I right in thinking that this gene is recessive, therefore both parents need to carry it? Also is there a test for it? Any advice or information would be very welcome. – Anne

Answer: A coagulopathy is a condition that means when a cat gets injured, the wound will not stop bleeding. You may be familiar with the condition of hemophilia. Hemophilia is a congenital condition where a certain clotting factor is missing and the blood cannot clot properly. It can be life threatening when large injuries occur.

Humans and animals alike can have blood-clotting disorders. They are diagnosed by blood tests. Congenital blood clotting disorders are more common in purebred dogs and cats, but can occur in mixed breeds.

Vitamin K is very important in blood clotting. Most rat poison contains Warfarin or similar products that cause internal bleeding when the rat eats the poison. The ?antidote? for Warfarin is vitamin K injections and tablets.

Many people have to take small doses of Coumadin to help ?thin their blood? and prevent blood clots from forming. Coumadin works in a similar way to Warfarin. It must be closely monitored to keep the anticoagulant level safe.

Vitamin K deficiencies can also occur from eating a deficient diet. Most vitamin K comes in green leafy vegetables. Bacteria in the intestines also make vitamin K.

The most common causes of vitamin K deficiency coagulopathy are ingestion of, rat poison, Coumadin, or eating a rat that has recently ingested large amounts of rat poison.

The best preventative is to make sure your cat is eating a healthy diet and does not have access to your medications. Make sure that you do not use rat poison and don?t allow your cat to hunt and ingest rats.

Fancy Dog Bowls

For the dog, eating time is prime time and them having their own special bowl is something helps the animal to feel special.  Dog bowls aren?t just special for the animal; they are special for the human as well.  There is something nice when we can give our home that special accent that makes the pet so valuable.
This year, there are a variety of choices in dog bowls, from ceramic to glazed to stainless steel to travel bowls to personalize dog bowls and every type size for every sized dog.
The other advantage the dog bowls are that they are dishwasher safe which makes for an easy cleanup.  If your dog likes to eat in a room that is bright and sunny then you might select one of the brightly colored bowls.  If your dog likes his territory, then you might select a personalized puppy bowl

Small Dog Puppy Halloween Costumes

There isn?t a better time to take the family dog along on an outing than trick-or-treating.  And, there is no better time to dress him in a costume than Halloween!

This year?s selection of Halloween dog costumes definitely has some great choices that will keep the entire neighborhood entertained.  For long doxies the Hot Dog Weiner costume is a great choice as they slip into the costume that fits around their body with two buns on the side a hotdog in the middle and ketchup and mustard on the top.

Other great ideas for small dog Halloween costumes are a fireman, a sailor, a nurse, a dog bumble bee costume, batman, a jail bird, a veterinarian, the Joker, Indiana Jones, Zorro and more.

For owner?s that want to make sure the family pet is involved in this year?s festivities, there isn?t a better way than their own special costume.  And, the selection is great~

Large Dog Seat Belts

Dogs can be especially hard to travel with and when transporting them in the car, and having the pet secured is a priority. Although m e a difficult time restraining our pets, it is for the safety of the pet and the safety of us while driving. Any of us have
The seat belts fit to the dog like a harness and attach to the existing seat belt in the car.  There is also the design of a strap that reaches across the back seat that attaches the two seat belts with the dog harness attaching to the strap, which gives the pet a little more mobility.
Whether your dog likes to ride in the back seat or the front, the dog seat belt will work fine for either and provides the security that your pet needs and helps you to keep your focus on the road.

Types of Dog Carriers

Dog carriers are an important accessory for anyone with a dog. The carriers are designed for ease and convenience to transport the family pet, and when the pet is the best friend, having him / her along for important outings or just time together is important.

Dog carriers are designed in many different styles with many being a fashion statement in themselves and styles include:

Dog sling:  The dog sling is a comfortable dog carrier that is used for small dogs and is warn over the owner?s shoulder.  The sling allows the dog to ride comfortably in the front or to the side of the owner.

Puppy purse carriers are truly unique and are a harness that fits onto the body of the dog with two straps just as a purse.  The puppy is then carried just as the owner was carrying a purse.

Handbag dog carriers:  Handbag dog carriers are designed to be extremely attractive for the owner and comfortable for the pouch.  The handbags have plenty of ventilation and can be completely closed or open for the pooch to peek out of.

Rolling carriers:  Rolling carriers are carriers that roll just as luggage and a comfortable and convenient ride for both owner and dog.

Is diagnosed lymphosarcoma cancer of skin or nodes?

Question: My dog was recently diagnosed with lymphosarcoma, but he has this cancer in his skin. I have read online about lymphosarcoma, and everything I read says it affects the lymph nodes, not the skin, like my dog. Can you explain this further?

Answer: It sounds to me like your dog has been diagnosed with cutaneous lymphosarcoma, which is also referred to as Mycosis Fungoides. This is an unusual presentation of a common type of cancer that we see in canine patients. As you describe, usually patients diagnosed with lymphosarcoma have enlarged lymph nodes. Only 5 percent of patients diagnosed with lymphosarcoma have the cutaneous form of this disease.

Lymphosarcoma or lymphoma is cancer of lymphoid tissue. There are lymph nodes that are present outside and inside the body. Usually when lymphoma is present, the lymph nodes become enlarged and this is the first symptom noticed. With cutaneous lymphoma, the lymphoid follicles present in the skin become affected. When this tissue becomes affected, we see things in the skin that are abnormal. Dogs with cutaneous lymphoma can have patchy hair coats, white flaky skin, raised red bumps in the skin, itchiness, overall redness in the skin, or discoloration of the skin. Sometimes the lymph nodes are also enlarged.

The diagnosis of cutaneous lymphoma is made by performing a biopsy of the skin. Treatment of this disease is with chemotherapy. The goal of treatment is make the patient more comfortable by eliminating the symptoms of the disease, by destroying cancer cells in the skin with chemotherapy. Cutaneous lymphoma can be a challenging disease to treat, and, unfortunately, remission rates are lower than in dogs with the more common types of lymphosarcoma. The good news is that patients with cutaneous lymphoma generally have cancer that is only confined to the skin. This disease is usually not present in internal organs. Patients tend to have symptoms related to their skin, but tend to continue to feel well. They usually have good appetite and activity levels. If the cutaneous component of the disease is controlled with therapy, their quality of life continues to be good.

Is there a Bufo toad vaccine?

Question: Is there any vaccine available for Bufo toads? I have a large dog who loves to go after them. — Jon

Answer: Bufo toads are plentiful right now. They love all the rain and insects available. The toads are getting big because they have a great supply of insects to eat. The rain and standing water make it perfect for them to lay their eggs and the tadpoles to hatch. On the good side, they eat many of the mosquitoes and insects.

Unfortunately, if dogs threaten the toads, the toads? only defense is to secrete a ?toxin? that causes the dog to salivate and get confused. Dogs don?t have to eat the toad to get poisoned. Many dogs only nudge the toads with their snouts and the thick white toxin rubs off on the nose and lips and enters the blood stream. A small amount of toxin may only make the dog look drunk and wobbly, however, large amounts can cause seizures and fatalities.

There is no vaccine or antidote available. If a dog is exposed to the toxin, take a wet washcloth and wipe off the nose, eyes, and mouth. Make sure to wipe out inside the lips or gently flush with water. Be careful not to forcefully squirt water in the mouth. If the dog has been poisoned, he may not be able to protect his airway from water and the water can get into his lungs. Bring your dog to the veterinarian as soon as possible.

Make your yard less inviting for toads. Do not leave dog or cat food in bowls outside, because toads love to eat pet food. Drain any areas of standing water and keep the lights off at night. The lights attract insects, which in turn attract the toads.

Teach your dog to avoid toads and leave them alone. To do this you should teach the ?leave it? command. Walk your dog on a leash at dawn and dusk. The toads prefer to come out at night, so be extra vigilant at these times. If you come across a Bufo toad, give your dog the ?leave it? command and praise him for ignoring it. Most dogs will quickly learn to leave the toads alone. Some breeds like terriers have a great internal drive or instinct to chase toads. These breeds may always need to be leash walked and the ?leave it? behavior reinforced during toad season.
